My new book is out, a month earlier than expected!

This new book is not a how-to book at all. It is a book of ideas. Fermentation as Metaphor is a reflective exploration of the power and versatility of fermentation as a metaphor, along with related (mis)concepts that come up a lot in people’s questions about fermentation: purity and contamination. This extended essay is accompanied by gorgeous microscopy images of fermented and other microbe-engulfed foods, some taken with my home stereoscope, others using a scanning electron microscope at nearby Middle Tennessee State University.

I’m teaming up with Short Mountain Cultures, my dear local friends with a fermentation business and natural foods grocery, to sell books. (They also sell my other books and a few other titles.) Mariposas Rebeldes is bringing you some #educationalcontent on corn and how it can be a revolutionary force for liberation and food autonomy.
We’ll be showing you just how versatile this grain can be by showing the nixtamalization and grinding process, preparation of fresh tortillas and tamales, and some funky fermented products like miso and tempeh made from corn! We will also be framing these topics through the lens of queer ecology and indigenous land practices"
