Sarah Owens, the founder and baker of BK17 Bakery and the author of the James Beard Foundation-nominated book, \”Sourdough: Rustic Recipes for Fermented Breads, Sweets, Savories, and More,\” will be teaching a hands-on class about the basics of the mysterious medium of sourdough, a natural leavening. Students will learn the process from start to finish: from maintaining a starter, to mixing, shaping, scoring, and baking in the home kitchen. Students will leave with dough to bake at home, some starter, and a few basic recipes. Snacks and wine will be provided.
All proceeds of this class will be donated to Just Food.
All class sales are final. Students must cancel at least 72 hours before the scheduled class to receive a Haven’s Kitchen credit of the full purchase value.
MEET THE CHEF
Sarah Owens is a professional horticulturist, former steward of the Cranford Rose Collection at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the founder of BK17 Bakery, an artisan microbakery specializing in sourdough that serves NYC. Sarah\’s customers receive freshly baked goods delivered through a subscription based on seasonally available ingredients and stone-ground heritage grains. She has been featured in Edible Brooklyn, on Gardenista, and also 66 Square Feet. She has also appeared on the Martha Stewart Show. Her botanically-inspired book Sourdough: Recipes for Rustic Fermented Breads, Sweets, Savories, and More is nominated for a 2016 James Beard Award.
