how long will unused scobies last?

Postby MadameFilth on Mon Jan 23, 2012 10:53 am

and as a side note, want a scoby?

i have had kombuchas brewing for months now, and i usually find takers for my extra scobies but when i didn't i just threw it in a plastic container with some kombucha and put it in the fridge. my question is, are they still good? when should i just toss them?

if anyone wants a baby, i can send it to you for the cost of shipping. i usually send it in a bubble wrap envelope priority mail, which costs $6. i'd ask that you paypal me the $6.

The last time I moved I stored my scobys in my fathers fridge for three months and they were still very alive when I was able to retrieve them. So, they can last at least that long.

I make four gallons at a time so I usually end up with lots of extras in the compost, but lately I have been cutting them in half and blending them up with my smoothies. Surprisingly, I can't differentiate between the scoby pulp and the fruit pulp, so the smoothies aren't anywhere near as nasty as I feared they would be. I feel much better about eating the mothers than I do throwing them out.
